Well it may surprise you to know that you need stress in your life. It’s true! Without stress, life would be dull and boring. Stress adds challenge, character and opportunity to life. However, too much stress can seriously affect your mental and physical health and well being. So how do you cope with with stress and manage it?

The key is to make the stress in your life work for you instead of against you. Stress is unique to every individual. What may be relaxing to one person may be stressful to another. Not everyone is relaxed just sitting around watching TV or laying in the sun on the beach. The busy person may feel extremely frustrated, non-productive and stressed out while “taking it easy” in this manner. On the other hand, struggling to make a deadline or having too much to do may make someone else physically ill.

Physical Activity—-Next time your are angry or frustrated, try running, walking, playing a sport or any physical activity. At work, take a break and climb the steps up and down.

Know Your Limits—If a problem is beyond your control or you cannot do anything about it at the moment, take a deep breath and relax. Accept the situation. Push it aside and do not worry about it until such a time arrives when you are able to take action.

Take Care of Yourself—Get enough rest, eat nutritional foods, exercise and do not use alcohol to “relax”. Find some quiet time, even if for 10 minutes in your car after work before driving home.

Make Time for Fun—Schedule fun time into your life. Recreation and sharing a good time with friends or family is a very important part of your wellness.

Try a Massage—The benefits of massage are numerous. It relaxes muscle spasms and relieves general body tensions. Massage dilates the blood vessels, thus improving circulation.
